Life's twists and turns led me to a career I never initially envisioned – physiotherapy. My younger years were filled with golf, and a burning desire to join the Royal Marines. After a year-long journey towards that goal, I met my now-wife and changed course. It's a decision I've never regretted.
Without a clear career path, I leaned into my passion for fitness and sports, becoming a personal trainer. As I dove deeper, I was eager to understand the intricacies of the human body, devouring books and courses. That led me to a corrective exercise specialist diploma, which unknowingly nudged me towards physiotherapy.
A job at Oxford University Press as a fitness instructor was another turning point. I even started a 7am "Kick 'n' Combat" class, thanks to my black belt in Tang Soo Do. Then, an unexpected request to write a newsletter article about the shoulder sparked something. It was the first time I considered physiotherapy as a path.
Until then, I hadn't seen myself as academic. But physiotherapy's appeal grew, and with a focused effort, I earned a distinction in an access to science course. That opened the door to Oxford Brookes University's physiotherapy program, where I graduated with first-class honors. I continued with a research masters and further specialised training.
Today, I live with my wife and two young daughters. Watching them grow, learn, and explore – whether it's ballet, gymnastics, or simply reading – is my greatest joy.
